I can’t live without a Hair Dryer! A Hair Dryer is indispensable when styling.
What Is a Negative Ion Hair Dryer, and How Does It Work?
A Negative Ion Hair Dryer has a built-in ion generator in which releases negatively charged ions. Negative Ions break up water molecules and thus drying hair faster than with no Negative Ions. For a super-smooth look, use a Negative Ion Hair Dryer to seal cuticles reducing frizz & flyaways. I recommend a Hair Dryer in which you can turn off Negative Ions. You may not always want flat hair.
Ed says, “Negative ion Hair Dryers dry your hair faster by producing negative ions to break up water molecules as you dry your hair.” The negative ions also help seals the hair cuticle, so you get less frizz. “You end up with a super smooth, sleek look to your hair.“, according you our in-house hair analyst, Meesh. Another advantage of using a “negative ion” Hair Dryer is you can use a lower temperature to dry your hair, so it is less damaging to your hair.

What Does Negative Ions Do?
Ionic hairdryers produce millions of negatively charged ions. When these negative ions are directed at positively charged water molecules in your hair they help break up the water molecules. The negative ions do not open up the hair shaft but instead the hair shaft stays smooth and sleek. This give the hair shaft it’s smooth, sleek and shiny appearance when using negative ions.
In my opinion, a ceramic hair dryer is useful to almost all hair types. If you were to look at the inside of a ceramic hairdryer you would see its specially coated to help spread heat evenly. The airflow can be inconsistent in a conventional hairdryer. Check out my article called is a ceramic hair dryer better for more and what to buy.
Ceramic hairdryers often control the heat by automatically sensing the temperature of the room and changing it accordingly. The air coming out of your dryer becomes warmer at the beginning of the blow-dry. Then the air cools down slowly. Your hair will dry faster and the cycle will cause less damage.
Benefits Of Using Ionic Technology
- Allows you to use a lower temperature to dry your hair. Less heat.
- Hair dries faster
- Much less frizz
Disadvantages Of Using Ionic Technology
- Ionic dryers and hair tools cost more
- Can easily over dry your hair
- Fine hair types may have limp looking hair
If frizz control is your main concern, in my opinion it would be worth investing in an ion hair dryer over a ceramic one or any other one for that matter. The negative ions are going to greatly help tame your frizzy hair.
In addition, if you would like the advantages of both ion and ceramic technology, there are hybrid dryers available and are affordable. These hybrid dryers produce ceramic coating while also spreading negative ions for faster drying.
One of my favorite hair ionic dryers is Sam Villa. Either the Pro Ionic or the Artist Series. And the reason why is because sometimes you do not want a flat sleek hair style. The biggest advantage these ionic hair dryers have is you can turn on and off ions with the flip of a switch.
If you have thin air then using an ionic hair dryer can give you a very flat look with not much volume. With the ability to turn off the negative ions you get the ability to style your hair and have some volume when needed.

So one of the big questions many folks have is should I use an ion hair dryer and what are the benefits of using an ion hair dryer? And in addition, many would also like to know, does an ion hair really work or is it just a gimmick? But before, I can answer those questions and more let me start by defining what a negative ion really is.
What Exactly Are Negative Ions?
The ionic particles or charge that is being generated by a hair dryer is creating an environment where your hair hair cuticle can be closed easily and the water from your hair be taken away much faster. If you take a close look at a human hair, really close, like through a microscope, you will see the hair cuticle looks like it has over lapping shingles like on a roof. These shingles can open and close. When closed you hair has that smooth shiny look. So the water molecule can be taken from your hair quicker and much easier.
What Are The Benefits Of Negative Ions?
So the big benefit to you is that it takes less time to dry your hair, it takes less heat and takes much less energy. And you end up with a very smooth polished blow dry look. So as you can see there are many great benefits that most folks will want so an ionic hair dryer makes since.
So that leads to the next question. And that is when is a time when I might not want to use an ionic hair dryer?
Is There Ever A Time When I Don’t Want To Be Exposed To Negative Ions?
So as it turn out this is actually a very important question and in fact there are going to be times when you do not want to use the ionic feature of the hair dryer. And for this reason I strongly advocate purchasing an ionic hair dryer with an ion on, off switch. By turning off ions you get maximum body and fullness that is impossible to achieve with the ions turned on. So this is going to be extremely important for those folks who have thin to medium thickness hair. Especially with thin textured hair you are going to want that nice full bodied look. So with an on, off switch it very easy to achieve. Just hit the switch and turn off the ions for that full bodied look. So by doing this you get more body and more density.
So ionic hair dryers are not a gimmick and they really work. They have fantastic benefits and are definitely worth buying. However, there are times when you are going to want to turn off the ionic feature so make sure you do your research on the perfect ionic hair dryer.
