A hair brush for curly hair features characteristics allowing the brush to be effective at brushing through dense thick curls. Brushes for curly hair all have similar qualities, but there are a few brushes that stand out and are worth mentioning because they can work through natural curly hair with ease.
Is a Macadamia Brush Good For Curly Hair?
Yes, the Macadamia Natural Hair Oil No Tangle Brush is big, bright colored, bold looking and great at detangling knots in hair gently. The Macadamia No Tangle Brush uses a unique design of “flex bristle” that gently diffuses tangles and knots, painlessly and safely in curly hair. The hairbrush ‘s remarkable bristles eliminate pulling, splitting and breaking.
The brush features multi-size bristles for super-smooth and minimal breakage and damage to the cuticles. If you want to brush conditioner through your hair without too much sectioning, the size is great.
It’s great that it has a handle, but the handle is tiny for such a bold brush. The bottom line it’s so huge for no handle. According to Meesh, Hair Product Analyst, “The best way to use it is to palm it in your hand.” It doesn’t have an incredible grip. Gives you stylish hair when brushing but for some it may be to soft. For folks who have thick and lots of hair the bristles may not be strong enough. And as a result you will not get the penetration needed to be used effectively. If you have thin hair I recommend this brush. If you have thick hair you are probably going to be better suited with a brush that has stiffer bristles like the Denman or The Wet Brush. On the plus side it’s made for all kinds of hair.

So with that being said if you are one of those folks who is not overly sensitive and extremely particular regarding your shampoo you will most likely like this combination.

Once you move beyond the angel princess look, it’s actually a fantastic brush. It’s great for wet and dry Afro hair. It’s huge (227mm long) and the bonus is that it’s heat resistant up to 115 degrees Celsius so you can use it as you blow drying brush too. If your hair doesn’t get many fairy knots, the density of the bristles is great. If you do, you can snag a bit before it glides through.I would not recommend this brush for those of you who have thick hair or thick and curly hair. In my opinion the bristles are not going to be able to make the penetration needed to do the job as effectively as some of the other brushes listed in this article.

If you like this brush then you are going to have to read my article on Denman brushes.
One great advantage this brush has over all other brushes is it can be dis-assembled for cleaning. The brush easily comes apart for cleaning. After cleaning you basically almost have a new brush again. But wait, there is more! You can also remove a row of bristles if you want. This makes for an even better detangling brush depending on your hair type. For folks with really thick hair this might be a very good idea. Why I like Denman’s large cushioned paddle hair brush for curly hair and you might too.
An interesting feature of this brush is you can remove rows. The brush has a removable pad from the handle. The removable pad hold the bristles. The brush then doubles as a wide tooth comb. Very unique feature as you get a brush and a comb!

Yes, the Wet Brush Pro detangler brush bristles are long and flexible enough not to rip your hair and the handle is great for maximum control when using slippery conditioners and oils. The soft tips also give the scalp a massage for a luxurious experience.

Super soft bristles (silicone bristles) from Intelli-Flex. Easily detach hair, even when wet. Super soft bristles from IntelliFle.
This brush is more than just a wet hair brush (can use on wet strands of hair or damp hair) , it’s a wet brush for curly hair. Despite the name, dry hair also works well. Read my article called: Does The Wet Brush work on dry hair? And my other article called: Is The Wet brush good for you hair?
The Pro Select Original Detangler Brush Stone Cold Steel from Wet Brush can easily brush your wet hair anywhere. The Wet Brush ceomes in fun colors. The Wet Brush set out on a mission to conquer the horrible problem of tear-free hair.
With IntelliFlex bristles, they created a unique brush that runs through hair effortlessly and detaches wet or dry hair without pulling or tugging. The soft bristles are very bendy, so you have to go a couple of times over a knotty section. Great for kinky hair or kinky coils.
You really can’t go wrong with a Wet Brush. They are one of my favorite brushes due to they are one piece handles and are good quality products that get the job done. You can count on getting great value for your money. Another fantastic Wet Brush I like is the Wet Brush Shine Enhancer. You can quickly learn more by checking out my article called The Wet Brush Shine Enhancer. Because they are delicate and soft, boar bristles are favored, but if you choose synthetic bristles, look for ones with rounded tips that won’t break.
One downside, well potentially a downside of the Wet Brush is each bristle has a tiny all at the end. These tiny balls or scalp massaging balls can come off. You are now left with a bristle with no end cap. This is not a good situation as the bristle can easily scratch you scalp. However there is an easy fix. If this happens just cut the entire bristle off at the base. You loose a bristle but the brush has plenty more. I have done this many times until one day I decide to replace the hairbrush.
Another hairbrush good for curls with a lot of flexibility is the Rizos Curls Pink Detangling Flexi Brush.
Can I Use A Tangle Teezer Detangling Hairbrush On Curly Hair?
Yes, the Tangle Teezer Detangling brush is completely different from the original. The teeth are stronger and much longer (4 mm), so it can ease curly and Afro hair much better than the old version. Longer teeth are mixed with shorter teeth for an easier pull through.Take a close look at the image above and you can see how some of the bristles are shorter than others.
It’s a handle-less brush so gripping is not that great. If it had a back strap or better grip it would make it to our favorites list. That’s really my biggest con. If you are interested in more information on detangling brushes please read my article called: What is the best detangling comb.
Manage your mane of soft waves or bouncy curls after shower or when it’s dry when you gain control and say goodbye to frizz. Comb knots and tangles freely with the ergonomic palm-shaped design of the Tangle Teezers.

If you are a man you may not want a Strawberry Pink colored brush so they have you covered with a Black version.
This sensational hairbrush removes knots and tangles as soon as you start to brush, no painful pulling and unnecessary hair breakage is necessary. The genius of Tangle Teezer ‘s teeth flex the right amount to relieve stress, detach and smooth the cuticle of the hair.
In contrast to ordinary brushes and combs that catch, tug and snag, Tangle Teezer is also hair extension and weave friendly. Tangle Teezer mixes with existing hair effortlessly to create a seamless and flawless finish. The Tangle Teezer kind of falls into “scalp massagers” category as well as a detangler brush. You can also use the brush as a scalp massager shampoo brush. On wash day it’s the first brush I reach for.
Sometimes you need a round brush for more style and control.
What Brushes Are Good For Curly Hair
If you have coily hair, smooth the edges with some gel or pomade before brushing. If your curls are looser, you can spray some hairspray on the brush itself to hold the curls in place. Good way to control baby hairs as well as smoothing coliy hair.

What Hair Brush Should You Use For Thick Hair?
The best hair brush for thick hair has the same characteristics as a brush used for thick curly hair. Hair brushes for thick hair are able to easily glide through tangles and leaving hair smooth and knot free. Bristles need to be flexible enough not to pull hair or cause hair to snap under brushing tension. Thick hair requires a stiff bristle for better penetration. The stiffer the bristle the faster the brush can work the knots. The more flexibility the bristle has the more brush strokes will be needed to work through thicker hair.
