Do Anti Static Hair Brushes Work?

Hairbrushes with anti-static properties are intended to lessen or get rid of static electricity in your hair. Your hair may become dry, frizzy, and flyaway because of static electricity, making it challenging to manage or style. Anti-static hairbrushes are made of materials like wood or anti-static bristle-and-yarn that are not intended to carry electricity.

Anti-static hairbrushes can help some people reduce the static electricity in their hair, but they may not make a big difference for other people. The type of hair you have, the humidity in your surroundings, and the type of hairbrush you’re using can all affect how effective an anti-static hairbrush is.

The short answer is yes but do not expect miracles. The best request are going to be using an anti-static hairbrush in conjunction with my top 10 list below.

There are a few things you may try to help lessen or get rid of static electricity in your hair if you are having problems with it. You can try using a leave-in conditioner or hair serum to assist provide moisture to your hair, which can help to prevent static electricity, in addition to using an anti-static brushing. In order to enhance the humidity in your home or place of business and lower static electricity in your hair, you may also consider using a humidifier.

Here Are The Top 10 Things You Can Try To Help Reduce Or Eliminate Static Electricity In Your Hair

  1. Use an anti-static comb or hairbrush: These combs and brushes are made to conduct electricity and disperse the charge across a large surface area, thereby reducing static electricity in your hair.
  2. Use a leave-in conditioner or hair serum: These items can assist your hair retain moisture, which can help to lower static electricity. Try using oils like coconut oil or hairspray or a touch of dry shampoo to tame frizzy hair. Hair masks are great for frizz-free hair. Hair masks are treatments that are formulated with oils, butters and other nourishing ingredients that helps moisturize your hair shaft and tame flyaway hair. Hair masks are great at giving your hair a natural shine look and feel.
  3. Use a humidifier: Increasing the humidity in your home or office can aid in lowering the amount of static electricity you experience in your hair. I suggest using a humidifier at least during the Winter or drier months.
  4. Avoid over-styling your hair because it might become static-prone and dry if you use too many style products or too much heat.
  5. When washing your hair, avoid using hot water because it will strip your hair of its natural oils, making it dry and prone to static electricity.
  6. Use a silk or satin pillowcase instead than a cotton one because they won’t likely result in static electricity building up in your hair.
  7. To eliminate extra moisture, gently blot your hair with a towel (I use a microfiber towel) rather than rubbing it with the towel.
  8. You should attempt to avoid brushing your hair as much as you can because it can cause static electricity.
  9. Use a dryer sheet: To lessen static electricity, run a dryer sheet through your hair.
  10. Wearing wool or synthetic clothes should be avoided because they might cause static electricity. Instead, try to wear natural fibers like cotton (which are natural materials).

Nylon bristle brushes are made from a synthetic material that reduces static and effectively detangles thick hair. I have found that wooden combs and brushes (with wooden pins, or with bamboo bristles also work well) to reduce static electricity because wood is not a natural conductor. The top ten remedies I’ve mentioned above have been a favorite of many professional stylists for years.

How Hair Type Will Effect Static Electricity In Hair?

Static electricity is more likely to build up on some hair types than others. For instance, hair that is dry and damaged is more likely to develop static because the cuticle, the hair’s outermost covering, is damaged, making the hair more porous. Static electricity may result as a result of the hair absorbing more moisture from the surrounding atmosphere.

A lower surface area also implies that there is less hair to disperse the electrical charge, which makes fine or thin hair more susceptible to static electricity. Because the curls and waves increase the surface area of the hair, it can be more difficult for the electrical charge to disperse, making curly or wavy hair more susceptible to static electricity.

Chemically treated hair, such as hair that has been colored or permed, is also more susceptible to static electricity because the chemicals can harm the cuticle, making the hair more porous and vulnerable to static electricity.

In general, the type of hair you have can influence the chance of static electricity in your hair, but there are other elements that may also play a role, including the humidity of your surroundings and the products you use.

My Favorite Anit-Static Hairbrush

The Static Minimizer Brush from Conair is a vent brush. The Static Minimizer Brush from Conair claims you can say goodbye to flyaways. The reason is that the brush uses innovative antistatic bristle-and-yarn technology to reduce static up to 80%. It can also be used as an everyday all-purpose hairbrush. The Static Minimizer Brush from Conair has cut-out vents in the brush head in which allows airflow to reach hair directly for fast drying and hair-styling.

The Static Minimizer Brush from Conair bristles are far apart and made of nylon and an anti-status yarn that is embedded in the brush head. The idea is that these tiny strands of yarn will grab the flyways and make them behave with every pass of the brush.

I think it’s a great idea. Because of the wider spacing of the bristles (similar in width to a wide tooth comb), the vent brush causes less static. Most hair stylists agree normal hairbrushes with densely packed bristles grab more hair and as you brush causes friction. Because the Static Minimizer Brush from Conair has less dense bristles and they are farther apart as you brush less it generates static. That is why the hairbrush is called Static Minimizer Brush.

Static Minimizer Brush From Conair Fights Static And Frizz

Static Minimizer Vent-Like Brush

The Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush has a unique brush head design. As I mentioned to above the brush head is infused with a special anti-static yarn. They add this technology to help control flyaways and reduce static. The biggest benefit is for folks who have a lot of static in their hair and have a lot of flyaways using the brush will help keep hair under control. The result is you will spend less time battling static conditions and your hair will settle nicely.

Can be used on both wet and dry hair. The Conair brush’s big advantage is it can be used on wet hair and is very similar in design as the 9 row Denman brush.

Anti Static Brush Head Design

I love antistatic yarn technology. With light static conditions, it works, and it works to control flyaways. The tiny anti-static yarn grabs flyways and puts them back in place with the rest of your hair. The result is a much smoother appearance. Now that being said, it’s not a miracle brush.

If you have a lot of static, it will not work so well until all your static conditions go away. It is not magic. However, it can become an effective tool when combined with water. One of the best ways to control static conditions and flyways is with water. A quick spritz with water and then a brush through with the Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush will most certainly go a long way in taming fizzy conditions. Safe for use on hair extensions.

Another benefit of the Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush is the flow-through head design. They have cut the brush head, allowing more air to pass through the brush and to your hair. This is a benefit because it speeds up hair drying. But in my opinion, the cut-outs are small, so I have to wonder how effective they are. Especially since the back of the brush is solid.

Anti Static Vent Brush Handle

The brush has a wonderful balance and feels while in your hand; I have no criticism here. The handle is comfortable, and the brush is easily controlled. Sometimes when a brush handle is too skinny, it hard to hold. The Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush has a nice handle that fits well with your hand. The handle is very secure.

Anti Static Vent Brush What I Don’t And What I Like

First, let’s start with what I don’t like. Not all vent brushes perfect, and so is the Static Minimizer Brush from Conair. This vent brush has some weaknesses. However, I consider these to be negligible for vent brushes. I really would not call it a vent brush. It’s sort of vented, but not a true vent design. That is not a fault. The brush just gets put into the vent brush category. The biggest weakness is the cut-outs. They do little.

Now for what I love!!! there are no, that’s right, absolutely no ball-tips to fall off. How wonderful is that? I would purchase the brush for that reason alone. In case you do not know what I am referring to at the end of each bristle, there is a tiny round ball tip that is glued over the nylon bristle.

Without the ball tip, it is inconceivable to brush your hair because as soon as the bristle comes in contact with your scalp it will be uncomfortable. The brush reminds me of an economy version of the Denman brush. It has the same style, but you cannot remove a row of bristles as the Denman brush can. However, the price is very attractive.

If you do have a vented brush with ball-tipped bristles and one comes off. The solution is fairly straightforward for repair. When the nylon bristle ball tip comes off, simply take a fingernail clipper or sharp scissor and cut the entire bristle. Now you are good for a time. Eventually, you will have no more bristles left and will be forced to buy another vent brush.

Most vent brushes last about one year or a little longer under heavy usage. So in my opinion that is not bad. You get your value from the brush before you have to buy another one. And that is under heavy use. If you use your vent brush under ideal conditions, then it’s going to last much longer. I have had some last five years and more. But with the Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush, that is of no concern.

How To Make An Anti Static Vent Brush Last Longer

The last thing and this is a tip on how to make your vent brush last longer. When drying your hair with a blow dryer, focus the air on your hair directly behind the vent brush and on actually on the vent brush. I see this a lot where hot is pointed directly at the nylon brush bristles.

Although it has heat-resistant bristles you still have to be very careful not to melt the bristles.

This will cause the bristles to melt, eventually. The result is your brush is slowly being destroyed. The best way to prevent this from happening is not to point the hot air directly at the brush head but behind the brush head on your hair and as you brush slowly move the hairdryer. The hairdryer then follows directly behind your vent brush.

The next tip is to make sure you invest in a high-quality hairdryer in which you can control the temperature and airflow. Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get a high-quality tool. If it comes down to burning my hair and having some money, I’ll pay a little more and invest in a better hairdryer.

Conclusion

If you are buying the Static Minimizer Vent Brush from Conair and expecting it to work miracles with static and flyaways, you are going to be let down. But if you are buying the brush to help with those conditions and are willing to use a spritz of water, then you are going to like the brush. Besides, if you hate ball-tips coming off your brush, then this one is for you because there are none to come off. In my opinion, this is a great general-purpose brush with some advances in static control.

Using the wrong hair brush can be responsible for a bad hair day.

Overall, it is of great value and a good brush. The brush head is well designed and works as it’s intended, but don’t expect miracles. It has some faults just like other vent brushes, but the positives easily outweigh the negatives. I think most negatives come from the fact folks are expecting a miracle static remover. The one thing about vent brushes and this one included is that they are great all-around brushes. You can use a vent brush to quickly brush through your hair and also to style while drying your hair. The vent brush is probably the most versatile out there, and this one is no exception. In most cases, all you need is a superb vent brush. I recommend the Static Minimizer from Conair vent brush.

But wait, there is more!

Conair came out with an improved version of the Static Minimizer from the Conair vent brush. Or really it’s a new brush altogether. The brush is essentially the same but the design has changed somewhat. The handle is different but still feels great in your hand. The biggest difference is in the bristles. They are now more rounded, with ball-like tips, but they do not come off. They are part of the bristle.

The newer version is not really a vent brush. There are no vents. It’s now a hybrid or totally different brush. I like the bristles are now mounted in an air cushion. This benefit will be great for folks who want a pleasant brushing experience as the bristles are now even more flexible. Overall, an excellent design and great appearance. I recommend either a brush, the older version, or the recent version.
