Do Round Brushes Damage Hair?
Round hair brushes can be a useful tool for styling your hair, but they have the potential to cause damage if used incorrectly or if your hair is already damaged or fragile.
Here are my top 5 tips for avoiding hair damage when using a round hair brush:
- Avoid using a round brush on wet hair: It’s best to wait until your hair is completely dry before styling it with a round brush. Styling wet hair can be damaging because wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage.
- Use a brush with soft bristles: Soft bristled round brushes are gentler on your hair and less likely to cause damage. Brushes with stiff or coarse bristles can snag and pull on your hair.
- Be gentle when styling: When styling your hair with a round brush, don’t use too much pressure. Brush gently and with a light touch to avoid damaging your hair.
- Use a heat protectant: If you intend to use a round brush with heat styling tools, apply a heat protectant to your hair to help prevent heat damage.
- If you have tangled hair, avoid using a round brush on it. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush to gently work through the tangles. Round brushes may be less effective at detangling and may cause more damage.
By following these tips, you can help reduce the risk of hair damage when using a round brush. It’s also a good idea to use the appropriate brush for your hair type and the style you’re attempting, and to be gentle when styling your hair.
ROUND BRUSHES: ROUND BRUSHES may be used to style hair, making them suitable for use on the scalp as well as the ends of the hair. I have compiled a list of ROUND BRUSHES on the market. ROUND BRUSHES are the go to styling brush.
Do Round Brushes Cause Split Ends?
Round brushes can cause split ends if used incorrectly or if they are made of materials that are too harsh on the hair. Split ends can, however, be caused by a number of other factors, including:
- Heat styling: Using heat styling tools on a regular basis, such as curling irons or hair dryers, can cause split ends and other types of hair damage.
- Hair dyes, bleaches, and other chemical treatments can weaken your hair and make it more prone to split ends.
- Lack of moisture: Split ends are more common in dry, brittle hair. To keep your hair hydrated and healthy, use a deep conditioning treatment and a leave-in conditioner.
- Improper hair care: Using harsh shampoos or blow-drying your hair on high heat can both cause split ends.
I highly recommend to reduce the risk of split ends when styling your hair with a round brush, be gentle and use a brush with soft bristles. When heat styling your hair, it’s also a good idea to use a heat protectant and to avoid using harsh chemicals or heat styling tools on a regular basis. Split ends can also be avoided with proper hair care and regular trims.
What Do I look For In ROUND BRUSHES?
First, I look for an ergonomic handle and a ROUND BRUSH body that does not snag hair. But the most important feature in a ROUND BRUSH is the size. Shorter hair will need a smaller diameter ROUND BRUSH and longer hair a larger diameter ROUND BRUSH. A medium size ROUND BRUSH is perfect for general styling, straightening, adding waves and curls.
My go-to best of the best ROUND BRUSH: Olivia Garden Thermal Collection Round Brush Why? The Olivia Garden brush has bristles on the short side. I recommend this brush for shorter hair. I like the ceramic and ion technology. Overall a very good round brush. Boar bristle brushes are well-known for their hair-strengthening properties, but they may be expensive. This is the brush to try if you have damaged hair and have always wanted to try a boar bristle brush without breaking the bank.
Another favorite of mine is the Moroccanoil ceramic round brush which creates volume and smooth, sleek looks on medium to long hair with this extra-large, round ceramic brush, which has cutting-edge construction and salon-quality materials. Ionic and ceramic characteristics speed up drying time while also conditioning the hair shaft for a healthier, shinier appearance.
Sleek, shiny design and an ergonomically-shaped handle for a comfortable grip. You can’t go wrong with this one! for best results I use this round brush in combination with a good heat protectant for blowouts. Great for fast styling, add shine, or to enhance shine you already have.
The main tip is to remember not to start brushing until you’re hair is at least 80-90% dry. This way you will minimize any damage. Next big tip is to use professional quality hair brushes. Put the nozzle on your dryer to direct the heat and use a non-metal round brush for a real smooth blow-dry.
According to Meesh, Hair Product Analyst, “By using a non-metal brush you are minimizing any possible damage that might occur by getting your brush to hot and burning your hair.” Finally don’t forget to section. It’s going to be much easier to separate your hair and work in small sections.
Professional Round Hair Brushes
A round hair brush is one of the best tools you can use to get that salon look at home. Use professional round hair brushes when blow drying hair, to add volume, to straighten hair, or to curl your hair. Round hair brushes are the most versatile. If you have long hair and want extra volume, use a larger diameter brush barrel. For tighter waves and curls, use a smaller diameter round brush barrel.
5 ROUND BRUSHES For Fine Hair Blowout
1. Suprent Blowout Thermic Ceramic & Ionic Round Barrel with Boar Bristle
I like the Suprent round brush because they got it right. It’s one of the best sellers and the reason is clear, it’s a good round brush that is not overpriced. It comes in 4 sizes so get the right size for your hair length and style. I would buy all 4 sizes so you have the right size for whatever curl or wave you want. The benefits are the ceramic barrel heats fast. Ion technology reduces frizzy hair conditions. Create fantastic curls and waves.
2. Osensia Professional Round Brush for Blow Drying
I like the Osensia round brush because it works great on all hair types. It’s good for short hair, medium hair, and long hair. The round brush comes in 6 different sizes for every hair length. Get a larger diameter round brush for larger curls and waves or a smaller diameter for tight curls and waves or short hair. The benefits are no snags and a solid round brush that will make you look fabulous. I recommend you purchase more than one, so you have the right size when you need it.
The biggest difference between the Osensia and the Suprent round brush is the Suprent comes in 4 sizes, so you have available to you, 2 more sizes in the Osensia. The Suprent also has a magnet at the end of the brush, and the Suprent has boar bristles and a nylon ball-like tip. It has two types of bristles. In my opinion, they perform equally well.
3. Conair Instant Heat Styling Brush
The Conair is a heated (Hot tools) styling brush. So for just a little more money, you can get a heated brush that heats in 30 seconds. According to Stacey our hair care analyst, “I love the 25 heat settings. The benefits are the fast heat-up time, and the 25 heat settings. With so many heat settings, you can dial in the exact amount of heat needed without burning your hair.” You can experiment to find the right setting for your hair type. It comes in 2 sizes, get the larger one for larger curls and waves or if you have long hair. Conair outdid themselves on this one. Bravo!!!
4. Fixbody Round Barrel Anti-Static Hair Brush with Boar Bristles
The Fixbody is very close to the Suprent round brush but has a different handle. The bristles are the same in my opinion and both perform equally well. The Fixbody comes in 3 sizes, where the Suprent comes in 4 sizes. In my opinion, you really can’t go wrong with either. The benefits are the same as the Suprent. It’s going to come down to the size. Remember an at-home blowout all starts with a great round brush!
Turn your hair dryer’s heat setting down for a cool blast of air to reduce frizzy hair while your hair is still wrapped around the brush. This will keep your hair in place, seal the cuticle, and prevent frizz. Cool air sets the shape of your hair while hot air shapes it. Although this may appear to be an extraneous step, if you ignore it, your effects will be short-lived.
5. Uppercut Deluxe Quiff Roller
Few round brushes impress me right out of the box, but the Uppercut does. But beware, this brush is mainly for folks who have short hair. As with most small-diameter rounds brushes, if you have fine long hair the chances of you getting the brush stuck in your hair is high.
According to Meesh, our product analyst, “So with that in mind if you have short hair and are looking for a lot of volume up-front then this brush is for you. The benefits are you get that huge lift upfront.” The brush has a lot of tension when it grabs your hair. I recommend it for folks who have short hair and want up-front volume.
According to Jon Alan Salons, in Nashville, TN, “Round brushes often come in two material options, ceramic with nylon bristles or wooden with natural boar bristles.“
My preference based on experience is a natural boar bristle brush with a wooden handle and comfortable grip. Plastic handles are OK if the grip is comfortable and it does not catch hair. But wood is my preference for durability.
Types Of Brushes Pros And Cons
The major factor in determining brush type is the density of bristles. Bristle density also helps in determining it’s purpose. Based on bristle density and shape (round or concave) you have the following types of brushes:
Brush Types | Right For Your Hair? | Brush Types Tips |
---|---|---|
Vent Brush | Drying hair | Styling |
Round Brush | Styling, waves and curls | Need the right size |
Paddle Brush | Brushing lots of hair fast. | Not for short hair |
Teasing Brush | Creating volume | Teasing only |
Detangling Brush | Detangling | Not for styling |
Oval Brush | Brushing and light styling | Not for really short hair |
Straightening Brush | Styling, straightening, curls & waves | Hard to use on short hair |
Bamboo Brush | Head massage and static control | Not for damp moist conditions |
Rat Tail Comb | Sectioning | Not for short hair |
Wide Tooth Comb | Applying treatments | Not really for short hair |
Boar Brush | Styling and shine | Detangling & static |
